Nursery Manager Erin: transforming the site and supporting growth

In February, MAKI Pups will celebrate four years of providing children with an inspiring and nurturing outdoor environment. Over this time, the nursery has transformed in incredible ways:

  • From a single bell tent in the old herb garden, the site now includes a large polytunnel, home to prize-winning vegetables!
  • A mud kitchen crafted with help from local college students.
  • A large sandpit made with help from our friends at SSEN.
  • A magical secret garden lovingly developed by the staff.
  • Wee dens, donated by our friends at Midton.
  • The cosy Hobbit House, offering a warm retreat since the installation of electricity.

Our dynamic and experienced team has been instrumental in these developments,” Erin says. “They are so in tune with the needs of the children and ensure every child is given the care, support, and attention they need. This was also picked up on during our Care Inspectorate inspection.

Parents sometimes worry about children being cold or wet, but Erin reassures them:With our comprehensive gear guide, children can and do spend the majority of their time outdoors.”

How Nature Shapes Young Minds

At MAKI Pups, children are encouraged to care for their environment and build meaningful connections with the natural world:

  • Rescuing and rehoming insects.
  • Filling bird feeders and observing a variety of species.
  • Planting, watering, and harvesting vegetables—such as pumpkins, which the children helped turn into “seed-to-soup” pumpkin soup.
  • Learning about litter and its environmental impact, inspired by our janitor Murdo, a constant presence with his litter picker in hand.

“The children have developed a wonderfully caring and gentle approach to nature,” Erin shares.

Nursery Practitioner Katy’s journey

With a background in animal and wildlife biology, Katy’s passion for outdoor learning grew from her desire to teach children about the natural world. Her journey led her to outdoor early years education, where she witnessed first-hand the profound impact of learning in nature.

The space and the freedom to play helps the kids to develop their confidence so much easier than in a classroom. The natural world is all around them and it is inspires them to engage and learn. Katy explains.

She recalls one shy, reserved child who, through outdoor learning, found the courage to interact with educators and peers, a touching breakthrough that highlights the nurturing environment at MAKI Pups.

Nursery Practitioner Lori’s vision

Growing up in a small village, Lori spent her childhood playing outdoors, which sparked a lifelong love for nature. Her journey into outdoor education began at Dalintober Pre-5 Unit and led her to complete Woodland Activity Leader Training.

“There are so many benefits to Outdoor Learning, such as developing a sense of wonder about the world, and a connection to nature that brings calm and helps the child’s mental as well as physical health,” Lori shares.

She highlights the child-led approach at MAKI Pups, where children learn to manage risks, supported by a team of creative, experienced educators. Lori finds daily joy in witnessing small but significant breakthroughs, whether it’s a child climbing a ladder independently for the first time or feeling confident and safe enough to speak.
