How did you first get involved with ACT?

I joined ACT in September 2024 to work on the development of the Our Rainforest Futures project. My background includes supervisory roles within hospitality settings, animal care roles and volunteering across the conservation sector. These experiences helped me build up strong people skills and an understanding of what it's actually like to work outdoors in Scotland in all conditions, all of which have been valuable in moving into this role.

What does your role involve, and how has it developed since you started?

My role is very varied and differs depending on the season. It combines office-based work and time spent out in the rainforest, creating opportunities for people to get involved in practical restoration. This includes building relationships with partners and communities to develop volunteering opportunities. Since starting I've had access to training opportunities such as the Branching Out leader training, Outdoor First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, and volunteer management training.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

One of the main things I enjoy about my work is being part of the ACT team, everyone is so supportive and encouraging, as are project partners in other organisations. I also really enjoy working with communities and meeting new people, but I think seeing people build confidence and develop new skills is one of the most rewarding parts of the role.

Advice for someone interested in this type of work

Don't be put off if your background or pathway isn't the "traditional" way into conservation. So many skills are transferable, especially when it comes to working with people. In my experience, volunteering is one of the best ways to build experience and skills, as well as networking with people already working in the sector. Being curious, open to learning and trying new things makes a big difference.
