As we countdown to our 10-year anniversary celebration in December, this week we are shining a light on one of our more recent projects. Since its launch earlier this year, the Argyll and Bute Climate Action Network (ABCAN) Seed Fund has supported local communities in responding to climate challenges through innovative and collaborative projects. Across four rounds of funding, we are proud to have supported 44 community organisations to deliver 63 unique projects, distributing a total of £55,193.

The Fund is supported by the Scottish Government and delivered in partnership with Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface. From food growing to renewable energy and awareness-raising initiatives, these projects are driving positive environmental change while strengthening communities across Argyll and Bute. These projects align with ABCAN’s key aims:

  • Raise awareness of climate change.
  • Build partnerships among community groups.
  • Empower communities to innovate and act on climate challenges.
  • Amplify local voices in climate advocacy.
  • Support a fair, sustainable future.

Supporting local innovation and action

Here’s some highlights of how ABCAN’s Seed funding has been put into action by local groups:

🌍 Climate Learning
From a Climate Action Film Festival at Campbeltown Picture House Trust to Gaelic nature events by CHARTS, these projects have inspired and educated local communities about the importance of protecting our planet.

🌱 Food Growing
Initiatives like Colglen Growers and Lorn Organic Growers and Rhu and Shandon Community Centre have provided materials to create sustainable food-growing spaces, fostering food security and reducing environmental impact.

🌿 Biodiversity
Efforts like Seil Biodiversity CIC’s tree seed project and Holy Loch Nature Reserve’s biodiversity equipment have contributed to preserving and enhancing our natural habitats.

♻️ Waste Reduction
Projects like The GRAB Trust’s support of Remake Argyll’s repair cafes and Hope Kitchen SCIO’s waste training workshops have been pivotal in creating cleaner, greener communities.

💡 Energy Efficiency
Innovative projects like ALIenergy’s cosy kits and Musuem of Islay Life installing UV panels have supported locals in reducing energy use and tackling fuel poverty.

Community Impact

These projects have had tangible benefits for people and the planet, as shared by the organisations involved:

The GRAB Trust

"This grant has helped island communities to take small individual actions that have a big impact on marine environments."

 Bullwood Nature Trail

"The funds allowed us to build and fire kilns, pay for electricity, and rent workshop space. The kilns, made from simple, inexpensive materials, showcase how others can create their own Biochar. This initiative supports the Bullwood Nature Trail by generating income through Biochar sales, ensuring the continuation and growth of the trail."

 Plastic Free Helensburgh

"The grant supported a well-attended 'big conversation,' featuring a mapping exercise and SWOT analysis. It facilitated collaboration, highlighted existing efforts, and identified gaps in local environmental initiatives. The event strengthened connections and inspired ongoing dialogue and action among volunteers and organisations."

 Argyll Wellbeing Hub

"Our group feels more equipped and knowledgeable after the funded activities, including weekly walks and forthcoming beach cleans. The sessions inspired fascination, with members still discussing the lessons learned weeks later. We've even begun noticing seasonal changes, like blossoming wild garlic and bluebells, enhancing our connection with nature."

 Ardrishaig Community Garden

"The seed grant enabled us to establish the garden's first growing area, sparking community interest. Workdays now draw visitors keen to discuss garden plans and learn about the benefits of growing local food. This has opened conversations on how individual efforts can positively impact climate and the environment."

 Oban Community Council

"The grant facilitated new conversations in Oban on public transport, flooding, carbon emissions, and green spaces. These discussions will inform our Community Action Plan and Local Place Plan, providing a climate-conscious framework for future decisions and ongoing community engagement."

Seaweed Gardens

"The seed grant allowed us to engage citizens in ocean conservation education through games, drawing, and discussions. It has also propelled our plans to develop youth ocean stewardship programs across Scotland, empowering the next generation to protect our marine environments."
