A helping hand

Volunteering opportunities provide a great way to support local communities, make a positive difference to the environment and attract visitors to areas they may not normally visit. Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust (IGHT) recognised the potential that volunteers could bring to the island, particularly through gardening and conservation work and proposed to set up a volunteer programme to encourage residents and visitors to get involved.

Support from ACT Hubs

IGHT asked ACT Hubs to support their idea by producing guidance and recommendations for developing and running volunteer programmes on the island. We produced guidance which included advice on how to recruit and retain volunteers, recommended policies and examples, resources required, eligibility, potential sources of funding, sources of useful information and case studies of other volunteer programmes embarking on similar tasks.

More information

The guidance was based on the needs of IGHT but is applicable and adaptable to any community group or organisation wanting to set up a volunteer programme. If you would like more information contact us: [email protected].
